As our work on what was previously known as Pier Square neared completion, it was revealed her Majesty Queen Elizabeth had given her personal approval for the square, opposite the Grand Pier, to be named Princess Royal Square – after Her Royal Highness Princess Anne.
Eamonn McGrath met with Princess Anne and spoke with her during her visit to the new Square where she unveiled a plaque. The Princess was impressed by the standard of workmanship and the overall feel of the new public space.
The seafront square has until now been known as Pier Square. Members of the public were asked in 2009 to suggest names for the revamped area.
EJ McGrath started work on the £3.9million square back in 2010 and it opened in February this 2011.
